Jacob attended Westtown Friends School, and later spent time in Newport, R.I., 
where his mother's sister lived.
	In 1862, Jacob established at Colerain, Ohio, a factory for the production of 
edged tools such as axes and chisels. Later he opened a store. By 1871, Jacob and 
his father Joshua Maule were in the mercantile business as "Joshua Maule and Son". 
Jacob was a recommended minister of the Religious Society of Friends for fifty years; 
he travelled throughout Canada and in North Carolina and Kansas. He had vision, and 
for twenty years served as a trustee of Belmont County Childrens Home. He was active 
in the temperance movement. Jacob also was a teacher.
Asenath Hirst's brother Thomas was the father of James Hirst who married Anna Steer 
(1E9T2).  Rachel was a teacher at Friends School in Germantown, Phila., Pa. She 
stopped teaching to marry and raise her family. She was described as "kind, helpful, 
cheerful, a just and sympathetic arbiter, patient in explanation in the schoolroom." 
Jacob and Rachel were members of the Concord, Ohio, Monthly Meeting of Friends.
