1850 in Willistown, Chester Co., Pa. farmer
subject of a chapter in The Hidden History of Chester County: Lost Tales from the 
Delaware and Brandywine Valleys" by Mark E. Dixon. He was an abolitionist, was 
disowned in 1846 because the rest of the meeting was tired of him speaking against 
slavery every Sunday. Forced by Concord Quarterly Meeting to take him back but he 
was disowned again in Jan 1852. Moved to Lower Merion as a child, after marriage he 
and Zillah moved to a farm at Providence and Marlborough Roads in Willistown. 
Unclear when he became an abolitionist but in 1832 he wrote an approving letter to 
William Lloyd Garrison's paper The Liberator. Evans considered his neighbors to be 
racists because they were reluctant to press vigorously for abolition. He wanted The 
Liberator in every household. His house was a stop on the Underground Railroad. He 
helped 150 slaves to escape. He enlisted others to expand the network. What 
disturbed the meeting was that Nathan managed to turn every issue into an abolitist 
argument. Robert Smedley described him as earnest, sincere, truthful, but tedious.
