Isaac was a plasterer and drove a delivery wagon. During the Civil War, he served on 
the gunboat "Mound City".
	On Nov. 15, 1890, Isaac deserted his family, his home, and his job. The 
apparent cause for his desertion was a fear that his employer, Jung Brewing Co., was 
seeking his arrest for using $400 of his employer's funds to buy drinks for the bums of 
Richmond, a habit which Isaac had developed while driving the delivery wagon. 
Isaac's employer, however, made it clear that charges would not be pressed if Isaac 
returned and "worked off" the debt. No one knows if Isaac ever learned of his 
employer's position. It seems that Isaac's employer later forgave the debt, hoping it 
would bring Isaac back to his family, who had fallen on the most dire of 
circumstances. Whether Isaac ever knew this, or whether there were other 
considerations leading to his desertion or at least in continuing it, are facts that 
probably will never be known. India, in the meantime, had started taking in laundry in 
order to support herself and the three children.
	It is said that Isaac wandered the Midwest, and it is even said he had 
"wives" and children in many places. Nothing of this sort has ever been confirmed.
	When Isaac died, both India and Rosetta claimed the widow's allowance 
under Isaac's Civil War pension. Since Isaac had not divorced India, she was 
awarded the allowance, but died soon thereafter.
