CLARKE John Joshua
Birth: 12 Mar 1832 Va.
Notes
1981 book (see for details)
1850 in Wilmington, Del., with parents, listed as engineer.
bplace from 1850 census
1860 1870 not with family
There is a census entry in the 1860 census for the Northern Division of Rockingham
County in North Carolina for a J.J. Clarke, age 29 (b 1831), born in Virginia,
occupation engineer. With him is Lucy S. Clarke, presumably his wife, age 26, also
born in Virginia, and Francis Martin, age 26, born in North Carolina.
per www.vahistorical.org/cwg/t.htm in Talcott Family Papers are letters written by
John J Clarke, discussing construction of pontton bridges on the Roanoke River in
March 1865. Is this him?
In Army of Northern Virginia, at Gettysburg, in Longstreet's First Corps, is a Maj. John
J. Clarke, engineer
Papers of this fellow at
www.vmi.edu/uploadedFiles/Archives/Manuscripts/00112Clarke/ClarkePapers.pdf
all they know is before enlistment he was a civil engineer, after war settled in Ga. and
was in Savannah in 1868, supt of Ga Central RR d c 1889 in accident in NJ
A bio of Longstreet by Jeffry D. Wert refers to John J Clark as "a civil engineer from
Petersburg"
There is a findagrave entry for Col John J Graham Clarke, d 15 Sep 1880, b unknown,
died in railroad accident, was on Longstreet's staff. bur Hollywood Cemetery in
Richmond
wwww.longstreetscv.org/newsltrs/200509.htm (Sept 2005) explains that on Sunday
Oct 16 2005, "we will be dedicating grave markers for two of General Longstreet's
staff officers at Hollywood Cemetery." Describes Colonel John J. G. Clarke as a native
of Richmond, was Longstreet's chief engineer, after the war returned home and was
the City Engineer of Manchester. Oversaw the construction of the wooden Manchester
or Ninth Street bridge.
1880 in Manchester, Va., John G. Clarke, age 48 (b 1832), civil engineer, wife Lucy S,
47, son St. John, 17, son Marion M, 11, dtr Annie 13, all b Va, with them is "sister"
Fannie Macon, 39 (b 1840), sister Lydia Macon 37 (b 1842), brother George K Macon
(lawyer), 35 (1845). So apparently this is the same guy as in earlier census. Could
Macon be surname of Lucy?
The index to Chaffin Family papers, www.vahistorical.org, lists John G Clarke and
Lucy S (Macon) Clarke on page 6
1850 Richmond: Miles Macon, wife Frances, children Lucy 21, Fanny 19, Lydia 17, no
George
per cagemacon.blogspot.com, Miles Cary Macon md Frances (spelled Francis not
spelled Frances in www.peterella.com account by one of the children of Miles) Mutter,
and had children incl George Kennon Macon. Francis was a first cousin of Dr Thomas
C Mutter, president of Jefferson Medical College
www.peterelia.com/joe/blogArchive.asp?id=87&catX=7&catV=3 confirms Lucy Selden
Macon married Colonel John G Clarke. This if from "My Life's Gleanings" by T.J.
Macon. He mentions that among the officers was a General J. M. St. John, which
would explain the name of one of the children.
In Confederate Colonels: A Biographical Register, by Bruce S Allardice, it says John
Graham Clarke was born 1832 in Va., resident of Petersburg pre-war, civil engineer
working on railroads in eastern Va. Md. Lucy Selden Macon, lists his military record.
Died in Paterson NJ 15 Sep 1880 when hit by runaway train. "Clarke used the middle
initial 'J' during the war and is indexed in the service records as such."
Interestingly, in 1850 I cannot find a John Clarke who could be the John G Clarke that
would permit a conclusion that he is a different person than John J Clarke.
There is a Va Death Cert for Miss Annie M Clarke, d 4 Nov 1942 Richmond, at
Sheltering Arms Hosp, d of coronary thrombosis, age 76, b Chesterfield, Va., dtr of
John G Clarke and Lucy Selden Macon, both b Va., reported by Miles C. Clarke of
