Anna was a poet.
 Anna was disowned by the Religious Society of Friends for marrying someone not a 
Friend. An account of Anna's and William's courtship and the consequences of their 
marriage is presented in "A Happy Romance in Letters from Hannah Whitall Smith", 
The Friend (Phila.), p. 379-381 (May 28, 1953).
	William was a renowned marine artist. Before he developed his reputation as 
a marine artist, he painted "View of Mount Vernon" (1854), "Tulip Trees" (1859), 
"Wood Scene" (1861), "Midsummer" (1861), "June Woods" (1864), "The Forest" and 
"The Wissahickon". In 1866, William went to Europe for one year, where he began 
concentrating on marine artistry. He returned to England in 1878 for two years, where 
he exhibited at the Royal Academy.
	Forty-seven of William's paintings hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 
Among his paintings are "Cedars on the Seashore" (1873), "Paradise, Newport" 
(1875), "Sand Hills Coast, N.J." (1876), "King Arthur's Castle, Tintagel, Cornwall" 
(1878), "Mullion Gull Rock" (1882), "The Unresting Sea" (1884), "Cliffs of 
Masher,Ireland" (1885), "A Summer Afternoon" (1886), "Cliffs of St. Colomb, Cornwall" 
(1887), and "A Break in the Storm" (1887).
	William was awarded a medal in 1876 at the Centennial Exposition. In 1885, 
he was given the Temple Silver Medal by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
Anna and her family lived in Phila., Pa., and at 7 Arnola Ave., Newport, R.I.
