Joseph attended Friends Select School on Cherry St., Phila., Pa. Joseph was a 
hardware merchant. He was a quiet, relaxed, honest, sincere, modest, broad-minded, 
purposeful, and well-organized man. He was deeply religious, liked to read, and had a 
sense of humor. He liked to draw and to carve toys for children. During his adult life, 
he was five feet, eight inches tall, and weighed 145 pounds. He had dark brown hair, 
brown eyes, and a brunette complexion.
    Joseph and Anna probably met in Moorestown, N.J., where Anna was attending the 
Mary Lippincott School and Joseph had Matlack relatives. Joseph and Anna's mother 
were members of the Religious Society of Friends, but Anna and her father were 
Methodists. Anna enjoyed cooking, sewing, and gardening; she was a quietly cheerful 
and industrious person, possessed of much common sense.
   After their marriage, Joseph and Anna lived for a few years in Stroudsburg, Pa. In 
1880, Joseph and his family lived at 1917 N. 19th St., Phila., Pa. In 1900, they lived 
at 413 High St., Germantown, Phila., Pa.
