MATLACK Samuel Dreher
Birth: 14 Jun 1873 Stroudsburg, Pa.
Death: 12 Feb 1950
Notes
1981 book:
Samuel was raised in North Phila. and Germantown, Phila., Pa. He attended Phila.,
Pa. public schools and Central High School. Samuel studied law at the University of
Pennsylvania, graduating in 1894. In the early years of his legal career, Samuel taught
at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and was associated with the law firms
of Matlack & Moise and Oliver & Weill. Later he was counsel for Lehigh Coal and
Navigation Co., and when Lehigh's legal business was assumed by the law firm of
Schnader and Lewis, he became "honored counsel" with that firm. Samuel was
scholarly, and enjoyed classical music and walking. Unlike Katherine he was not a
church-goer until he was in his late fifties.
Gilbert Stuart Moore was descended through two lines from the Walker family (see
1E); thus Samuel and Katherine were related. Katherine graduated form Girls High
School, Phila., Pa. and from the Phila. Normal Schools. Before her marriage, she
taught in the Phila., Pa. public school system. She was bright, animated, dynamic,
outgoing, and humorous. She was a member of the Women's Club of Germantown, the
Alliance Francaise, and the Matinee Musical. She wrote a garden column, "Your
Garden and Mine", for the Philadelphia Press. Both she and Samuel enjoyed opera,
orchestra, bridge, reading, and gardening.
After their marriage, Samuel and Katherine lived at 7209 Boyer St., Mt. Airy,
Phila., Pa. Later they lived at 7414 Boyer St.
