Notes
1981 book:
William succeeded his father in the lumber and seed business. With his father he was
at one time partner with Atlee Burpee, who went his own way. Maule Seed Company,
under William's direction, became renowned worldwide. Its catalogs were shipped
everywhere and some remain preserved to this day. William let his brother Charles
handle the details of the lumber business so he could oversee the development of the
seed company. William was a member of the Union League, the Art Club, and the
Racquet Club, all in Phila., Pa.
William made a great fortune in the seed business. he lived at "Briarcrest" in
Villanova, Pa.; this estate contained not only a huge mansion that still stands and the
usual assortment of outbuildings, but also contained a golf course because William
was a devoted golfer. Briarcrest was at the corner of Spring Mill and Gulph Roads; a
picture of the mansion is found on page 211 of Hotchkin, "Rural Pennsylvania"
(1897).
