Dear Jim,

We have corresponded in the past - but I wanted to pass on to you the sad news that 
my dear Grandmother passed away on December 1, 2012 at (yes) 108.  She spent the 
last four years at Mather House at the Hill at Whitemarsh - a nursing home.  At 104 
she sustained a fall that made the nursing home care necessary.  While age finally 
took its toll in the last few years of her life, she was unfailingly gracious, loving and 
kind.  We already miss her dreadfully, but what a wonderful life she had and how 
lucky we were to have her as long as we did!  As we writing some items for her 
obituary, we were talking about her interest in genealogy, and I thought of your work 
on the Maule family, so thought I would drop you this note.

Eleanor Matlack Davis, educator
Eleanor Matlack Davis, 108, died on December 1, 2012 at the Mather House at the 
Hill at Whitemarsh in Lafayette Hill, PA.  She was predeceased by her husband of 53 
years, W. Leonard Davis, and her daughter, Sarah Davis West (Gordon) and a great 
grandson, Nicholas Lorello.She is survived by her son, Charles S Davis III of Devon 
(Gretchen),  five grandchildren, Caroline West (Jonathan Sprague) of Philadelphia, 
Jennifer Hawksworth of North Wales, Hannah Davis of Plainfield IL, Charles S Davis 
IV (Min Jung) of Bellevue, Washington and Katharine Davis of McKinney, Texas and 
eight great grandchildren, Sarah Borgmann, Scott Hawksworth, Hannah Sprague, 
Daniel Sprague, Austin Pilotte, Sarah Pilotte, Aiden Lorello, Dylan Lorello.
A native of Mt. Airy and graduate of Germantown High School,  she was a 1926 Phi 
Beta Kappa graduate ofGoucher College where she majored in English and served as 
senior class president.    A life-long educator, she taught English at West Philadelphia 
High School and served as an editor at the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education 
before her marriage.  Following her marriage in 1928 to W. Leonard Davis, she did 
substitute teaching in Philadelphia and then at Springside School in Chestnut Hill (now 
Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) until she became a full-time first grade teacher in 
1943.  In 1955 she was named Director of the Lower School, a position she held until 
her retirement in 1968.  Thereafter she had an active retirement, volunteering in the 
Philadelphia public schools, at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, and at All Saints 
Hospital, a rehabilitation facility in Wyndmoor. 
She and her husband raised their children in Mt. Airy, and moved to Wyndmoor in 
1960.  Following her retirement she and her husband travelled extensively, something 
she continued with friends after his death.   She and her husband engaged in a life-
long interest in history and genealogy, which informed many of their travels.  Following 
her move to Springfield Retirement Residence, she was active on the Residents 
Council, organized and maintained the library until she was 100, and spent countless 
hours tending and maintaining the grounds. In 2008, at the age of 104, her health 
required a move to Mather House.
She was a warm and caring person who throughout her life made and maintained a 
wide range of friends. She enjoyed contact with many former students and their 
families, and her genuine interest in others combined with a strong intellectual 
curiosity, kept her younger than her many years.  
Friends are welcome to join her family at a memorial service celebrating her life.  The 
service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Chestnut Hill, on December 22, 
2012 at 11:00.  Interment will be private.  
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory be made to St. Paul's 
Chestnut Hill or SpringsideSchool  (David Peaketo confirm details)
