Notes for Dale Sheriff:
General Notes:
Dale joined the navy in 1894 at the age of 20 and served in the Spanish American
War. He was a member of the Spanish American War Veterans and the Hope Masonic
Lodge Virginia Dale Harter, gdaughter of Dale and Harriett wrote: "Papa (what she
called her gfather) had sailed around the world and fought in the navy in the
Spanish-American war. He was from Kearney, Nebraska. His profession then was a
printer, and he worked for the newspapers, and was an activist for the printers union,
even after he retired, serving as president many times. He retired as chief proof-reader
for the Government Printing Office. When he was ready to retire we moved from the R
St brick row house, to the house on Luzerne Avenue. The house on Luzerne had a
very large lot and he and Mama (what she called her gmother) were really into
gardening. The yard was a showplace. I don't remember them ever going to church,
but they were highly moral and ethical people. Papa's family were strict methodists, I
don't know what or if the Browne's were."
