Thomas R. Dixon of Gurnee 


Services for Thomas R. Dixon, 83, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Gurnee 
Community Church. 

 Born July 19, 1916, at home in Gurnee, the son of Ray and May Dixon, he died 
Friday, April 28, 2000, at Highland Park Hospital. Interment will be in Warren 
Cemetery. 

 Thomas was a lifelong resident of his beloved Gurnee. Thomas was an active 58-year 
activities. He was a 52-year member of the Gurnee American Legion. He was a 1934 
graduate of Warren Township High School. 

 Serving in the Navy from 1943 to 1945, he had many stories about crossing the 
Atlantic, the Normandy Invasion and the Liberation of France. Tom, while working as a 
policeman during his early 20s gained notoriety when he was shot by a burglar, but 
through the grace of God, the bullet hit his badge and his life was spared. He worked 
for 30 years for the Great Lakes Naval Base. He also worked for the Village of Gurnee 
for 15 years as a building inspector. He served as police magistrate and a volunteer 
fireman. Tom was a member of Gurnee Community Church and a former longtime 
member of the Episcopal Church. 

 His greatest joy was the love he had for his children and grandchildren. 

 Survivors include his wife of six years, Irma (nee Stone); daughters, Susan (Paul) 
Boardman and Sheila (Wayne) Swank; son, Thomas M. (Susi) Dixon; grandchildren, 
Lauren Boardman, and Ryan and Maren Dixon; stepchildren, Valerie (John) Reynolds, 
David (Lois) Levin, Susan (Thomas) Perdue, Allison (James) Baer and Ray (Sue) 
Joseph; 17 stepgrandchildren; one great-stepgrandson; brothers, LaVerne (Ruth) 
Dixon and Robert (Jeanne) Dixon; and sister, Ethel Quedenfeld. 

 He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 48 years, Shirley (nee 
Reynolds); two brothers, Maurice (late Eve) and William (late Dorothea); sisters, 
Esther (Howard) Knaack and Mary (Arthur) Welton; and brother-in-law, Hank 
Quedenfeld. 

 Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, at Salata-Gurnee Funeral Home, 4190 Old 
Grand Ave., Gurnee.
