Charlotte Maule Carey, 71, passed away on April 1, 2017, at her home in Merkel, TX.
Charlotte was born on April 13, 1945, to George and Josie Maule. She grew up on
their farm in Camp Springs, TX. She graduated from Hobbs, TX as valedictorian in
1963. Charlotte married Scott L. Carey on May 8, 1964.
Charlotte began her career in county government as assistant Pecos County Auditor
in Ft. Stockton, TX in January 1979. She was appointed county auditor on March 7,
1993. She continued serving in this position until her retirement in 2004. She was a
member of the Texas Association of County Auditors where she served as Director
from 1996-1998. She was then elected President of the association in 2001. During
her time as auditor, she worked with several senators and representatives in Austin
crafting legislation pertaining to county government. In May of 2000 Charlotte was
appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Texas County and District Retirement
System by then governor, George W. Bush. She was awarded the prestigious Jerry
Ware Leadership Award by the Texas Association of County Auditors in 2003.
Charlotte continued to grow in her chosen career by becoming a level II certified
investment officer. She never stopped learning and growing and was very respected
by her peers.
Charlotte was a wonderful, Christian wife, mother and friend who was unwavering in
her faith. She loved studying the Bible and teaching others about God’s word. She
was a member of the Merkel Church of Christ. Charlotte was very kind and
encouraging to others. Classmates said she was the “wisest, most mature and well-
mannered of us all.” She enjoyed sewing, cooking, writing poetry and being with her
grandchildren.
Charlotte is survived by her husband of fifty three years, Scott of Merkel; two
daughters Sunne Schaake and husband Scott of Abilene, and Tracey Carey of Merkel;
granddaughters Brittane Schaake, Brianne Schaake, and Lindsey Carey; sister Linda
Halder of Phoenix, AZ; brother Brad Maule of Nacogdoches and wonderful nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Josie Maule; brother Steve
Maule; and brother-in-law Ron Halder.
A celebration of life service will be held at Merkel Church of Christ on Wednesday
April 5, 2017 at 2:00pm. Visitation will be Tuesday April 4, 2017 from 5-7PM at
Starbuck Funeral Home.
