George Edward Maule

HERMLEIGH – George Edward Maule, 84, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, in the Heritage
House in Rotan. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 29, 2006, at the First
United Methodist Church in Rotan. Burial will be in the Camp Springs Cemetery
directed by Weathersbee — Ray Funeral Home.

George was born September 24, 1921 in Fisher County to the late James Edward and
Almeda Ann (Davidson) Maule. When George was eleven, he rode his horse to Snyder
to see a rodeo. The legendary cowboy, Joe York, let him ride in the gate with him so
he would not have to spend his dime, and later bought him lunch. Ever since, he has
loved horses, fat cattle and good rain. George took over the farm at the age of 13,
bought his own saddle and began breaking horses for his dad, so he could trade them
(he broke his last horse at the age of 75). He married Josephine Holt at Camp Springs
April 19, 1941.

George served in the Navy during WWII and was involved in the "Battle of Bari,
Italy". During the three weeks of this battle with the Germans, the United States lost
23 out of 27 ships docked and trapped in the Bari Harbor. George was a gun captain
of twin 5" guns and shot down a German fighter trying to bomb their ship. He was
injured with shrapnel at this time and was awarded the Purple Heart. His ship was able
to escape to freedom during the daylight hours at the end of the three long and
exhausting weeks and because of George’s successful knowledge and experience
with the new 5" guns, the Navy stationed him at Treasure Island where he started a
gunnery school and taught officers how to use this new weapon.

After the war, George bought a farm near Camp Springs and made it his home with
Josie and their family for sixty years. He continued to farm and ranch and perfected
his roping and heeling skills. He won numerous belt buckles and a saddle for his
championship roping in 1979. George was a member of the First United Methodist
Church of Rotan.

He is preceded in death by his wife (2003), a son (Steve Maule 1965), two brothers
(Homer and Boyd Maule) and two sisters (Minnie Jewel Barbour and Marie Willsie).

Survivors include: two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Ronald Halder of Fort
Worth, and Charlotte and Scott Carey of Merkel; a son, Brad Maule of Nacogdoches;
two sisters, Clara Belle Sumruld of Tulare, CA and Eva Storey of Visalia, CA; six
grandchildren, Sunne Schaake and husband Scott, Tracey Carey, Vince Halder and
wife Beverly, Stephanie Cralley and husband Rich, Hunter Maule and Lily Maule; and
five great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 28, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Weathersbee — Ray
Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Heritage House in Rotan or West Texas Rehabilitation
Center.
