Donald Hutchinson Choate, 65, a former senior vice president of Northern Trust Co.,
retired early to devote himself to his interests in theater, the environment and
community mental health. A resident of Lincolnshire, he died Tuesday at home. Mr.
Choate graduated from the Taft School in Waterbury, Conn., and from Yale University.
He joined Northern Trust in 1950 and retired in 1986 as assistant secretary of
Northern Trust. "He saw that some people in the generation before him at the bank
had not been prepared for retirement," his son-in-law, Alan Wolf, said.

Donald Hutchinson Choate, 65, a former senior vice president of Northern Trust Co.,

A resident of Lincolnshire, he died Tuesday at home.
Mr. Choate graduated from the Taft School in Waterbury, Conn., and from Yale
University. He joined Northern Trust in 1950 and retired in 1986 as assistant secretary
of Northern Trust
"He saw that some people in the generation before him at the bank had not been
prepared for retirement," his son-in-law, Alan Wolf, said.
"He was interested in life in general and he decided he would retire and become more
involved in the specific things which he greatly cared about."
Mr. Choate served as president of the board of the Counseling Center of Lake View
from 1987 to 1991.
He was on the board of Wisdom Bridge Theater and had served as its treasurer.
He also served for almost 10 years as steward of St. Francis Woods in Libertyville.
The Nature Conservancy, which acquires land to return it to or preserve it in its
natural state, appoints stewards for lands to oversee them, coordinate volunteers
working on them and, when necessary, conduct controlled burnings for prairie lands.
Survivors include his wife, Sidney; three daughters, Annie, Susan Wolf and Elizabeth
Dicker; seven grandchildren; and two sisters.
Memorial services for Mr. Choate will be private
