CHARLES D. MARKHAM was born in Knoxville, Tioga county, Pennsylvania, January
31, 1854, a son of William and Betsey Markham, a sketch of whom will be found in
this chapter. The subject of this sketch was reared in Knoxville, and obtained a
common school education. He began his business career as a clerk in a drug store at
Knoxville, in which he served three years, when he purchased the business of his
employer and carried it on four years. The year 1882 he spent in the South, and in
1883 he located at Potter Brook, Tioga county, where he has since carried on general
merchandising. In 1879 Mr. Markham married Emma J. Martin, a daughter of William
and Mary A. (Johnson) Martin, of Knoxville, and has one son, Carl W. Mr. Markham is
a member of the Christian church, and also of Cowanesque Lodge, No. 351, F. & A. M.
In politics, he is a Republican, and served as postmaster of Potter Brook five years.

Death of Charles D. Markham
Charles DeWitt Markham, one of the best known citizens of the Cowanesque Valley,
died at his home in Potterbrook July 4, at 11:45 p.m. He had been in failing health for
some years. Charles D. Markham was born in Knoxville, Jan. 31, 1854, a son of
William and Betsy Markham. His father, William Markham, was born in England in
1817, and when six years old came to this country with his parents who settled at
Ithaca and later moved to Deerfield, this county, where John Markham, the
grandfather of Charles, was one of the early settlers and cleaned up a farm of 200
acres. Charley Markham, as he was familiarly called by his many friends, was reared
in Knoxville and obtained a common school education, says the Courier. He began his
business career as a clerk in a drug store and after three years purchased the
business of his employer and carried it on for four years. In 1883, he located to
Potterbrook and since then had conducted there a general merchandise business, and
served as postmaster several years. In 1879 he married Emma J. Martin, of Knoxville,
and they raised an adopted son, Carl W. Markham. His first wife died a number of
years ago. About fourteen years ago he married Miss Alice Cushing, of Knoxville.
They had one daughter, Doris, aged 9 years. Mr. Markham was a member of
Cowanesque Lodge, No. 351, F. & A. M., having joined April 5, 1876 and was the
oldest in point of membership of the lodge at the time of his death. Funeral services
were held July 9 at 2 o'clock at the home in Potterbrook, and the burial was in the
Riverside cemetery at Knoxville, and was conducted by the Masonic fraternity,
Cowanesque Lodge. Besides his wife and daughter and adopted son he is survived
by one brother, Albert Markham, who is 68 years old, and has been in feeble for a
number of years, for several months passt being confined to his home
