Walter attended the Chestnut Grove School, Gum Tree, Pa., Coatesville High School, 
and George School, from which he graduated in 1914 and where he was a track star. 
Walter attended Swarthmore College, where he received his degree in 1919. He 
interrupted his college training to enlist in the Armed Forces during World War I.
	Walter was for many years general manager of the Mushroom Growers 
Cooperative Association, an organization which he was instrumental in creating in 
1925. From 1920 until 1932, he also engaged in mushroom growing near West Grove, 
Pa. Walter also served as secretary and general manager of the Mushroom 
Cooperative Canning Company. He was director for seven years of the National 
Canners Association, a trustee of the American Institute of Cooperation, and 
organizing president and council member of the Pennsylvania Association of Farmer 
Cooperatives.
	Walter was an influential voice in the mushroom industry, on a national 
level. He secured funds for mushroom research, for developing new strains of spawn, 
and for finding new insect control methods; he secured duty protection for domestic 
mushroom growers against imported mushrooms and succeeded in having mushrooms 
declared an essential agricultural crop during World War II. Walter was instrumental in 
making southern Chester County, Pa., the "mushroom capital of the world".
	Walter was a member of the executive committee and board of directors of 
the National Bank and Trust Company of Kennett Square, Pa., and vice-president of 
the bank. He was active in the development and building of the Community Memorial 
Hospital in Jennersville, Pa., and was a vice-president of its board of directors. Walter 
was a director of the Chester County Historical Society, an active member of the 
executive committee of the Brinton Family Association, a member of West Grove 
Friends Meeting, the Kennett Square Lions Club, and many other civic, professional, 
and trade associations. At one time, Walter was a member of the Selective Service 
Board for West Grove, Pa.
	Walter lived in Chester County, Pa., all his life.
Charlotte attended Swarthmore College.
	Memorial services for Walter were held on Aug. 9, 1964, at Harmony Road 
Friends Meeting, West Grove, Pa.
	In 1981, Charlotte lived at 147 W. State St., Kennett Square, Pa. 19348.
