Ransom was a brilliant man who, dedicated to his research, never married. He earned 
several degrees in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering--his highest a Ph.d. from 
Princeton where he was mentored by Albert Einstein. As an assistant professor at the 
University of Utah, he worked with Bruno J. Zwolinski and Henry Eyring, producing a 
multitude of books and treatises about the results of their research. He contributed to 
the Miller-Urey experiment helping to prove that earth's early atmosphere was capable 
of spontaneously producing life from non-organic chemicals. According to a history of 
the Chemistry department of Utah, "Ransom Parlin, a gifted physical chemist, left Utah 
in the 1950's and died prematurely." He apparently moved to Washington, D.C. where 
in the early 70's he was dying of throat cancer. My sister, who visited him at that time, 
found him to be a very hospitable and accommodating uncle living alone with his cats 
and playing his flute.
