Helen was born in China, the daughter of a Methodist missionary. She started studying
to be a doctor at the University of Michigan, getting a B.S. degree and completing one
year of medical school before marrying Jack Bronk Batchelor. During WWII, until Jack
returned from his tour of duty, she worked for a time as a medical lab technician.
Helen was an accomplished musician playing the violin, cello and organ for her
father's services in the Methodist Church in Iron Falls, Michigan. She loved living a
private life in the country with her children and animals. She was an intellectually
brilliant woman in an age when such women were rarely appreciated. She was humble
and talented at making people in her life feel at home with her. Helen had 6 children,
5 grandchildren and, at this writing, 4 great grandchildren. She gave her body to
science on her death.
