The thing about Elwyn's discharge and service in Coblez in 1920.  I don't know how 
that works because he was in China from 1917 to 1930 or 29.  His first son, Raymond 
was born there Jun 1918 and my mother was born there in July 1920. A record from 
Wesleyan says he was in charge of the Modern Language department at Northwestern 
University from 1913 to 1914 and he was a modern language instructor there from 
1914-1917.  He married Madeleine on June 13, 1917 and they headed off to China 
that same year. They were missionaries in Yungchun City, Fukien Province from 1917 
to 1929 or 1930 with occasional visits back to the states.  I have a passport dated 
1930, but also a record of them arriving in the states in 1929.  I do have a story 
written by him about being captured by the Germans during a war.  No dates, just 
apparently the U.S. was neutral at the time because when they figured out he was 
American they let him go to Switzerland.  From there he left for Holland and came 
back to the U.S.  I don't know whether that was during WWI or WWII.  So that 
reference to Coblez is interesting.  I just can't figure out how it really fits in.  Maybe he 
was a spy?  I don't believe that really.
Grandpa had a marriage before he married Madeleine.  Her name was Helen Patterson 
b. 1891 in Connecticut.  She died giving birth to her son, Raymond Elwyn on May 13, 
1914.  Her son also died that same day.  I don't know if he was stillborn, but he was 
named Raymond Elwyn and buried with his mother at Trinity Church Cemetary, 
Portland, Middlesex County, Connecticut.
